Exposed white groundThe feast of Our Lady of Tikhvin is celebrated on June 26. She is one of the most venerated Marian icons in Russia. According to legend, the original icon appeared in the 14th century floating on a cloud at the mouth of the Tikhvinka River, where a church was built at the site of the apparition. This was dedicated to the “Dormition of the Mother of God” and later became the main church of a monastery. The icon performed many miracles and healings and protected the monastery during the war. People prayed to her especially for the health of their children.

Russia, 19th centuryThe Gospel of John recounts how the soldiers divided Christ’s clothes among themselves, but cast lots for the single-piece undergarment. The four pieces of the outer garment were given as a gift to Russian Tsar Michael Feodorovich and Patriarch Filaret in Moscow by Shah Abbas I at the beginning of the 17th century. The Russian Orthodox Church celebrates the deposition of this relic in Moscow on July 10. According to legend, the Holy Robe was found by St. Helena during her pilgrimage to Jerusalem and given by her as a gift to the Bishop of Trier, where it was enclosed in the altar of the cathedral.

After it was discovered by the emperor’s iconoclastic spies, she cast the image into the sea, where it floated upright. Many years later, the icon appeared in a pillar of fire off the coast of the Iviron Monastery on Mount Athos, where it was retrieved from the sea by a hermit and a church was built for it by the monks of the monastery.

According to legend, Andrew, a fool for Christ, and his disciple Epiphanius had a vision in which the Mother of God spread her maphorion over the people as a protective cloth. The lower part of the painting depicts the singer Romanos, whose feast day is celebrated on the same day as that of the Mother of God Pokrov.

Russia, 19th centuryIn the center of a four-pointed star, the Mother of God is depicted with the Child as Emmanuel and Christ the King. In another red star below, the symbols of the four evangelists—Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John—are depicted. Around them, angels with Akathistos symbols are shown on clouds. In the four corners of the picture are the saints Isaiah, Ezekiel, James, and Moses.
