Venetian-Cretan, 17th centuryContrary to the general assumption that the theme of the nursing Mother of God originated in Italy, it actually stems from 6th-century Coptic art. The Mother of God is depicted in half-length, her head bowed, holding the divine child in her arms. The Madonna’s breast is painted in an abstract manner, as this theme is primarily symbolic in nature and was never depicted in a completely naturalistic way.

In the background, the Mount of Olives rises on the left, in the center the palm tree from which the children take branches to welcome the Lord, on the right Jerusalem and architecture symbolizing the temple.
